METCALFE, ON, Oct. 3, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, and Pierre Poilievre, Member of Parliament for Nepean-Carleton, today announced a contribution of up to $3,000 to restore the Metcalfe Cenotaphs. The two cenotaphs are located side-by-side. One commemorates those who served in the First World War and the other, those who served in the Second World War.
"Supporting these memorials is one way our Government is ensuring that the sacrifices of the Veterans and the brave men and women in uniform who serve Canada so selflessly are remembered," said Minister Blaney. "The memorials we build and restore today tell the story of communities who have worked together to honour their local heroes."
"Our Government commends the Osgoode Village Community Association for their efforts in preserving the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice," said MP Poilievre. "It is gratifying to know that younger generations will have special places and memorials like these to reflect on the courage of remarkable men and women in uniform for years to come."
The Osgoode Village Community Association will restore the Metcalfe Cenotaphs, which are located in front of the Town Hall. Planned restoration work to the First World War monument includes building a new sub-base to add additional names, correcting a misspelled existing name and cleaning the monument. The Second World War monument will also be cleaned, and the flagpole base located in the centre of the two monuments will be repaired and cleaned.
Funding for this initiative is provided through the Cenotaph/Monument Restoration Program. Through this program, our Government works in partnership with community groups and local organizations to ensure that cenotaphs and monuments honouring our nation's heroes are conserved to the highest standard of care and dignity.
Applications to this program can be submitted at any time during the year and are reviewed on a quarterly basis. Interested non-profit groups and other organizations may be eligible for funding. For more information, please visit veterans.gc.ca.
