Wounded Warriors Canada Sponsors National Summit for Public Safety Personnel

Partnership with CIPSRT to Understand Stressors, Risks & Vulnerabilities among Public Safety Personnel

ST. JOHN'S, July 26, 2017 /CNW/ - Wounded Warriors Canada was proud to sponsor the inaugural strategic meeting of the Canadian Institute of Public Safety Research and Treatment (CIPSRT). The national Summit brought together the Public Safety Steering Committee, Associate Directors, Scientific Director and representatives from Police, Fire, Paramedics, and Correctional Workers to determine research priorities, strategic objectives, clarify partnerships, and coordinate funding efforts. The Associate Directors include, Dr. Greg Anderson (Justice Institute of British Colombia), Dr. Heidi Cramm (Queen's University), Dr. Renée MacPhee (Wilfrid Laurier), and Dr. Rose Ricciardelli (Memorial University).

The Summit concluded today with participants from all public safety personnel sectors having had the chance to provide extensive feedback on the health and well-being needs of their members and families over the last two days.

Scott Maxwell, Executive Director of Wounded Warriors Canada, commented, "This Summit brought forth an extensive amount of information – across all sectors – with respect to the stressors associated with duties we require from our public safety personnel in Canada. What's more, important information was collected as to the steps in the development of CIPSRT, and where the First Responder and other Public Safety Personnel as a whole should focus its collective energies when it comes to supporting its members affected by Operational Stress Injuries. We were proud to sponsor this Summit and look forward to being a CIPSRT partner in the important months and years ahead."

Dr. Nick Carleton, Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Regina, commented, "We were honoured at the incredible commitment and effort contributed by our Public Safety leaders and the many stakeholders working to support their efforts. The results were amazing and we feel we now have a terrific framework for building forward together."

CIPSRT is a national network operating within the governance structure of the Collaborative Centre for Justice and Safety at the University of Regina. CIPSRT is coordinating a research-driven response to address the urgent needs of all Public Safety Personnel, including Police, Fire, Paramedics, and Correctional Workers.
