Women On Board Welcomes New Federal Advisory Council To Promote Women as Corporate Directors
Invites Government to Utilize the Women On Board Network of Qualified Board Candidates
VANCOUVER, April 3, 2012 /CNW/ - Women On Board, a not-for-profit society that works to promote the appointment of women to corporate boards in Canada, today welcomed the announcement by the Federal Government that it intends to create an advisory council to promote women as corporate directors. The announcement was made as part of the recent federal budget and stated that the new council will work with the private sector to "link corporations to a network of women with professional skills and experience". As part of this process, Women On Board invites the government to utilize the Women On Board network of qualified women corporate director candidates.
The Women On Board network is comprised of some of Canada's most accomplished female executives who have all participated in the Women On Board Mentoring Program, the organization's flagship program that matches senior executive women with board chairs and CEOs from leading companies for a period of two years. The program has been successful in preparing mentees to serve on boards, facilitating appointments and forging connections between women and corporate boards and their members.
"Any significant increase of women in the corporate boardroom can only happen if corporate and board leaders are actively involved, engaged and connected with qualified women candidates" said Carol Stephenson, Director and Co-founder of Women On Board, Dean, Richard Ivey School of Business and director of several corporate boards including General Motors and Intact Financial. "We applaud the government's initiative to promote progress on each front and hope our network of qualified women director candidates and engaged senior business leaders, that we have developed over the last six years, will be helpful to them."
Women On Board is developing an online resource for boards of directors to help them identify and connect with Women On Board's corporate director candidates by providing access to their detailed board profiles. The organization expects to announce full details in the coming weeks.
