Women in leadership positions help enhance organizational performance: Ernst & Young

Firm's Anne-Marie Hubert and Fiona Macfarlane named among Canada's most powerful women

TORONTO, Dec. 4, 2012 /CNW/ - Ernst & Young is proud to honour Anne-Marie Hubert, Managing Partner, Advisory Services, and Fiona Macfarlane, Managing Partner, British Columbia and Chief Inclusiveness Officer who both earned spots on the 2012 list of Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100™.

"I am delighted that two of our accomplished leaders are being recognized," says Trent Henry, Ernst & Young's Canadian Chairman and CEO. "Both Anne-Marie and Fiona exemplify the innovative thinking, drive and dedication that make a difference for our clients, and our own people, every day."

Canada's Most Powerful Women: Top 100 is Canada's best-known awards program for the country's highest-achieving women leaders in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

"We believe that investing in the enormous untapped potential of women is a strategic imperative. Women are not only the largest pool of incoming talent globally — for our organization as well as others worldwide — but they are also our future clients and the biggest economic growth engines of the next decade," says Henry. "Women like Anne-Marie and Fiona help our firm lead this charge."

That philosophy is echoed in a recent Ernst & Young report, High achievers: Recognizing the power of women to spur business and economic growth, which shows that women are the largest emerging market in the world. Over the next decade, women will wield enormous influence over politics, sport, business and society. And, in the next five years, the global incomes of women will grow from US$13 trillion to US$18 trillion. That incremental US$5 trillion is almost twice the growth in GDP expected from China and India combined.

This is fourth consecutive year that Hubert has been honoured with the award, recognizing her ongoing influence and leadership in the professional services sector. In addition to her work advising board members and senior management teams on governance, performance and risk management, Hubert serves on the boards of the Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec (FCCQ) and the Public Policy Forum. Inside and outside Ernst & Young, she has been a vocal advocate for diversity and gender equality, and was recently awarded The Catalyst Canada Honours for her work supporting the advancement of women in business.

During her time with Ernst & Young, Macfarlane has led significant portfolios, including managing partner of the Canadian Tax practice — the first woman among the "Big Four" accounting firms to hold such a position — and was awarded an Honorary CA in 2011. She is a governor of the Business Council of British Columbia as well as Shawnigan Lake School, and serves as a board member of BC's Aboriginal Business and Investment Council as well as the Immigrant Employment Council of BC. She is also an immediate past member of the Canadian Board of the International Women's Forum. Macfarlane is a passionate advocate for the inclusion of women, visible minorities, immigrants, aboriginals, LBGT and other underrepresented groups, fostering an environment in which a diversity of backgrounds, perspective, skills and experiences is celebrated and deployed as a strategic advantage. This is the second year Macfarlane appears on the Top 100 list.
