OTTAWA, Feb. 22, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - Today, the Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, Canada's Minister of Labour and Minister of the Status of Women, encouraged Canadian National Railways (CN) and Unifor to continue negotiating to avoid a work-stoppage at Canada's largest rail company.
Minister Leitch has been in contact with both parties and continues to work with them, and federal mediators, to help CN and Unifor resolve their outstanding issues. As she has stated previously - "the best solution to any labour dispute is always the one that parties reach themselves".
During her negotiations with both parties, Minister Leitch has been able to secure a commitment from both CN and Unifor to ensure that commuter rail service in Montreal will not be affected by any work-stoppage. AMT trains will continue to operate in the Greater Montreal area without interruptions.
The rail industry is not a self-contained sector - it links to other modes of transportation and impacts employers and producers who depend on rail to deliver their goods. A work stoppage could have serious economic implications for Canadians who depend on the railways to make a living.
- Our Government is committed to keeping Canada's workplaces safe, fair, and productive.
- The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service is working with both parties to help resolve this labour dispute.
- In 94% of all cases where the FMCS has been involved, work-stoppages have been avoided.
"I would like to thank Unifor and CN for their commitment to keep Montreal's AMT trains running. I urge both parties to continue their positive discussions and remain committed to the negotiation process to avert a costly work stoppage. As always, our Government's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service will continue to provide assistance to both parties throughout the negotiation process."
– The Honourable Dr. K. Kellie Leitch, P.C., O.Ont., M.P., Minister of Labour and Minister of Status of Women
