OTTAWA, April 26, 2014 /CNW/ - Dr. Sarah Mary McIsaac was recognized today for her outstanding leadership skills, as the 2014 recipient of the Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership. The award was presented to Dr. McIsaac by Dr. Roger Strasser, Dean of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, during the CaRMS Forum – Interactive session at the Canadian Conference on Medical Education (CCME) on April 26, 2014 in Ottawa.
Dr. McIsaac, who is currently in her fourth year of residency in the combined Anesthesiology program at the University of Ottawa and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, has a strong academic background and holds many local and national leadership roles.
"I am honoured to be the 2014 recipient of the Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership," said Dr. McIsaac. "This prestigious award will allow me to continue to participate in leadership development courses that help to inspire innovation in health care education."
The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) Board of Directors launched the Sandra Banner Student Award for Leadership in 2013 with the aim of encouraging the development of future leaders in medicine. The award is accompanied by up to $5,000 in leadership development funding.
Dr. McIsaac intends to use the award funding to pursue the formal educational course "Leading Innovations and Health Care and Education", delivered by the Harvard Macy Institute. The course will give her the knowledge and skill sets to continue developing the e-learning platform of NOSM's Anesthesiology postgraduate training program. It will also broaden her foundation on how to successfully implement organizational health care change as it pertains to patient safety and well-being, as well as allow her to make international contacts with like-minded individuals who will play an influential role in medical education in the future.
Sister Elizabeth Davis, a member of the CaRMS Awards Committee recognized for her outstanding leadership qualities, said the response to the award has been inspiring: "We received applications from medical students and residents across the country and each submission demonstrated the unbelievable talent, commitment and ambition of this generation of medical learners. The content of the submissions reflects both a level of understanding of the broader issues which are fundamental to good health for persons and for communities and a level of leadership which will help transform the Canadian health system in the years to come."

Dr. Sarah Mary McIsaac has a strong academic background having completed a B.Sc. (Kin), B.Ed. and M.Ed. (Educational Psychology) from Western University prior to moving abroad to pursue a medical career. She graduated with honours from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 2010. During her medical undergraduate career in Ireland her leadership skills and interest in education expanded through activities as a sports union captain and peer-led lecturer.
Returning to Canada, Dr. McIsaac was accepted into the combined Anesthesiology program offered through the University of Ottawa and the Northern School of Medicine (NOSM). Over the course of her residency, Dr. McIsaac has been mentored by her program directors Dr. Desiree Persaud and Dr. Rob Anderson. Through a collaborative team approach, Dr. McIsaac has worked on the creation, design and implementation of an innovative e-learning platform for postgraduate anesthesiology trainees at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. McIsaac has taken on many leadership roles during her residency training. She is the current assistant chief resident of the University of Ottawa/NOSM Anesthesiology program. She also takes an active role in provincial leadership and is the current resident representative on the Ontario Medical Association's Section on Anesthesiology executive committee.
Dr. McIsaac is a strong advocate for innovation in health care education and continues to work towards fostering an environment of cooperation, collaboration and leadership amongst medical students, residents and staff alike.
