Water levels can rise quickly and without warning

Significant rainfall expected in many parts of Ontario

TORONTO, Oct. 27, 2015 /CNW/ - Ontario Power Generation (OPG) wants people to be extremely careful around Ontario waterways this week, particularly on rivers and lakes near hydroelectric stations and dams.  Large amounts of rain fall are expected across the province as Ontario braces for a fall storm.

"We use the power of water to generate clean, reliable electricity, but this rain could result in higher than normal water levels,  says Mike Martelli, OPG's Senior Vice President of Hydro Thermal Operations. "Swollen streams and soaked river banks are hazardous if you venture too close.  The waters near hydroelectric stations can be particularly dangerous.  Stay Clear, Stay Safe."

"This fall we've found several people in areas they should not be.  We want people to stay safe.  We're asking people to obey our signs, and respect the fences, booms and barriers near our facilities.  They are there to help protect you," Martelli noted.

People who trespass on OPG property are putting themselves in harm's way and breaking the law.  They can be charged with trespassing.

OPG provides over half of the electricity used by Ontario homes and businesses and 99.7 of the energy it produces is free of emissions that cause smog and climate change.  OPG operates 65 hydroelectric stations and 240 dams across Ontario.  We also operate two nuclear stations and three thermal stations.  We're dedicated to making sure our generating stations continue to provide clean, reliable power at about half the cost of other generators.
