AJAX, ON, Dec. 26, 2013 /CNW/ - Veridian crews worked through the night to restore service to customers still without power caused by the severe ice storm of last weekend. Approximately 1,700 customers in the City of Pickering and the Town of Ajax still remain without power as of noon today.
Veridian has increased its line and tree trimming crews to 32, thanks to assistance from Peterborough Utilities, Lakeland Power and Whitby Hydro. The company will soon be receiving additional support from Orillia Power.
While Veridian has maintained the strength of its line and tree trimming resources into today, restoration progress has slowed due to the recent snow accumulation and the remaining affected areas are those with the most storm-related damage. Also, much of the remaining restoration work involves supply lines located in customer backyards, making access more difficult.
Following is an outage status report for each of the communities in which Veridian is aware of customers that continue to be without service:
Clarington - All affected customers have had power restored, with the exception of a few individual customers with damaged equipment that must be repaired or replaced to accommodate reconnection.
Port Hope - All affected customers have had power restored, with the exception of a few individual customers with damaged equipment that must be repaired or replaced to accommodate reconnection.

While Veridian continues to be committed to restoring power to all affected customers as quickly as possible, equipment damage affecting individual customers may result in prolonged power outages.
In some cases, repairs to customer owned meter bases and service masts must be completed before Veridian is able to restore service to individual customers. The repair or replacement of such equipment must be carried out by a licensed electrical contractor retained by the customer. Approved contractors can be found at http://applications.dmtispatial.com/esa/ or by calling ESA at 1-877-372-7233.
Customers are reminded to exercise extreme caution around damaged poles and downed wires. All fallen wires should be considered live and dangerous. Customers are urged to report the locations of fallen wires to Veridian's 24-hour Outage Hotline by calling 1-866-579-6819.
