TORONTO, July 27, 2018 /CNW/ - Unifor members at Casino Ajax, Elements Casino Brantford, and Great Blue Heron Casino in Port Perry have ratified a new four-year collective agreement with Great Canadian Casinos.
"Unifor members are pivotal to the profitability of the gaming sector," said Jerry Dias, Unifor National President. "Casino workers have earned a share of the gains enjoyed by the employer."
Unifor members from Local 1090 at Casino Ajax and Great Blue Heron Casino as well as Local 504 at Elements Casino Brantford voted to accept a tentative agreement on July 26. The new contract includes a wage increase in each year of the agreement and a one per cent increase to the pension. It also ensures Ajax workers can retain the benefits of union membership after the expansion of the Pickering casino.
"Unifor members in the casino sector enjoy a wage and pension advantage," said Naureen Rizvi, Unifor Ontario Regional Director. "Protecting members' benefits when the employer shifts work to different sites is a clear advantage of collective bargaining."
Unifor members working in security at Woodbine Casino and Elements Casino Mohawk will vote on ratification July 27 and 28 respectively.
Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy, including more than 19,000 workers in hospitality and gaming.
