TMX Group CEO to mark the occasion with a market open celebration
TORONTO, Oct. 24, 2012 /CNW/ - TMX Group Limited is pleased to announce that Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is celebrating its 160th anniversary today.
"In its 160th year, Toronto Stock Exchange is an engine of economic growth, corporate funding and investor opportunity," said Tom Kloet, CEO, TMX Group. "On TSX, issuers across Canada and increasingly from around the world seek the funds needed to fuel growth and innovation. Today, we celebrate an historic milestone, however, we are not resting on our past achievements but remain steadfastly focused on building an exchange that serves the needs of investors, participants and issuers far into the future."
Toronto Stock Exchange officially began 160 years ago on October 24, 1852 when a group of Toronto entrepreneurs met to create an association of brokers, which established the framework for the Exchange. Today, Toronto Stock Exchange is home to almost 1,600 issuers with total market capitalization of $2.1 trillion. The Exchange has become a global leader for mining and energy finance, as well as a destination for companies from around the world seeking North American capital.
To mark this important milestone Mr. Kloet and Ungad Chadda, Senior Vice President, Toronto Stock Exchange, will open the market today at 9:30 am ET, along with TMX Group employees from across the organization.
For Market Openings: Media may pick up a feed from the TOC (television operations centre) for all market open ceremonies. The feed is named TSX Transmit 2 and is produced at the TMX Broadcast Centre and sent live to the TOC. Those featured in the market opening move into position for the market open ceremony at approximately 9:27 a.m. and the markets will open with the sound of a siren (the traditional market open on Toronto Stock Exchange) at 9:30 a.m.
