Torkin Manes Partner Elected Treasurer of The Law Society of Upper Canada

TORONTO, June 29 /CNW/ - Torkin Manes LLP proudly congratulates its partner Laurie H. Pawlitza on her election as Treasurer for The Law Society of Upper Canada. Laurie is the third woman to be elected to the Law Society's most senior elected position since the Society was founded in 1797. She will now chair Convocation, which is the Law Society's Board of Directors. The Law Society is the governing body for 42,000 lawyers and 2,900 paralegals in the province, setting standards of practice and regulating the profession.

Laurie has been a Law Society Bencher (elected member of Convocation) since 2003. She has always taken a very active role, including co-chairing the Retention of Women in Private Practice Working Group, which organized The Justicia Project, a partnership of 56 of Ontario's largest law firms that promotes the retention and advancement of women in private practice. Torkin Manes actively supports the project. Laurie has also chaired the Professional Development and Competence committee, responsible for setting standards for licensing and competence in the profession.

A busy family lawyer, Laurie sought the Treasurer's position because "change is happening quickly, both in our increasingly diverse profession, and in the way we provide legal services. I think I can help lead that change." In addition to her role at the Law Society, Laurie will continue her practice of family law at Torkin Manes.

"We are delighted to give Laurie our full support as she takes on this well deserved role," noted Jeffrey Cohen, managing partner at Torkin Manes. "In addition to her excellence as a family lawyer, Laurie embodies the spirit of giving back to the community, a strongly entrenched tradition at this firm."
