World's largest interfaith gathering will take place November 1 – 7 at Metro Toronto Convention Centre
TORONTO, Oct. 25, 2018 /CNW/ - This November, the seventh Parliament of the World's Religions will welcome thousands of people from different ethnicities, beliefs and spiritual backgrounds to Toronto.
"As one of the most diverse cities in Canada, there is never a shortage of things to see and do," says Zul Kassamali, Co-Chair of the Toronto 2018 Parliament. "It's because of this diversity and inclusiveness that Parliament has chosen Toronto as host city for 2018. Our schedule of events and programs is one-of-a-kind and will offer participants a unique opportunity to connect with other guests and speakers on many different levels."
With more than 500 programs and events scheduled to take place from November 1-7, 2018 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, it can be hard to decide which ones to attend. While all the programs are noteworthy, here are five of Parliament's must-see events:
- Margaret Atwood
On Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, Canadian poet, novelist, literary critic, essayist, inventor, teacher and environmental activist Margaret Atwood will join Parliament for an exciting session titled Women and Climate Change: A Conversation Between Margaret Atwood & Lucy Cummings.
This conversation will explore the intertwined nature of climate change, conflict, and violence against women. The event begins at 4:15 p.m. in room 106. - Sikh Langar (lunch)
Every day of the Parliament a langar will be provided for registrants.
Langer is the term used in Sikhism for the community kitchen where a vegetarian meal is served to all visitors, without distinction of religion, caste, gender, economic status or ethnicity. Join Parliament's langar daily from 12 – 3p.m. on Level 800, Exhibition Hall FG at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. - Film Festival
A collection of ground-breaking movies and documentaries will play throughout the week including Indian Horse, The Gate: Dawn of the Bahá'í Faith and Radical Grace. Attendees are encouraged to attend various screenings and take part in Q and A sessions after select screenings. - A Dynamic Dialogue with the Right Honourable Kim Campbell
The Right Honourable Kim Campbell has served Canada as Prime Minister, Minister of Justice, Attorney General and Minister of Defence. She is the first woman to lead a government in North America and is a global thought leader of the highest order. This session will feature a lively dialogue with Jonathan Granoff and Audrey Kitagawa, Chair of the Parliament's United Nations Task Force and President of the Light of Awareness Spiritual Family, followed by responses from retired Lieutenant-General Romeo Dallaire and Senator Douglas Roche. This session on November 6, 2018 at 4:15 p.m. in room 106 will delve into what wise leadership, values, vision and politics look like on the personal, national and global level. - Climate Action 2018
One of the six tracks Parliament will focus on this year is Climate Action: Care for our Earth, Responsibility for our Future.
In the spirit of harmony, the Climate Action Task Force for Parliament is calling for individuals, organizations, businesses and institutions at all levels to actively accept responsibility for the impacts of climate change on life on Earth. Climate change affects us all and our decisions and actions in 2018 will shape conditions on earth for the foreseeable future.
Don't miss the Climate Action programming and events that encourage participants to think critically about our planet and the steps we can take to ensure its protection. For a list of Climate Action programs at Parliament, please visit: parliamentofreligions.org/program/climate-action
