TORONTO, Nov. 14, 2012 /CNW/ - Members of the media are invited to attend an address by The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Canada's 27th Governor General and Commander-in-Chief, on Thursday, November 15, 2012 as she is honoured by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) as the recipient of the 2012 CFPC/Scotiabank Family Medicine Lectureship Award. Mme Jean's address is entitled "Transformative Interventions: Treating the Social Determinants of Health". The presentation will take place at the CFPC's Family Medicine Forum (FMF), the premiere family medicine conference, hosted this year in Toronto for 5,000 family physicians and other health professionals from across Canada. FMF 2012 is co-hosted by the CFPC, its Sections of Teachers and Researchers and the Ontario College of Family Physicians (OCFP) which will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its annual scientific assembly.
The CFPC/Scotiabank Lectureship is awarded to an outstanding national or international figure who has contributed significantly to medicine, family medicine, and/or the health and well-being of the population in Canada and/or around the world.
"The CFPC/Scotiabank Family Medicine Lectureship Award acknowledges the tremendous contributions that Mme Jean has made to populations around the world," says Dr Sandy Buchman, CFPC President. "Through her role as Governor General of Canada and beyond, Mme Jean, who also holds Honorary Membership in the CFPC, has worked passionately to improve the quality of life for millions of individuals - residents of women's shelters, under-privileged populations, and people suffering from natural disasters. With a particular interest in empowering youth, Mme Jean has a unique ability to bring people together through dialogue and community engagement to enhance their lives. The CFPC is proud to honour Mme Jean as a most deserving award recipient and to receive her keynote address at this year's Family Medicine Forum."
The $10,000 award presented to Mme Jean will be donated to the Michaëlle Jean Foundation (FMJF), which supports youth arts initiatives designed to transform young lives and revitalize underserved communities across Canada. Through its national network of over 700 grassroots organizations, FMJF equips disadvantaged youth with the the tools and drive to ignite change in urban, Aboriginal and rural communities, through the arts.
The keynote address by Mme Jean will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at 8:00-9:30 am ET at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre - South Building. The lecture will be followed by the presentation of the CFPC/Scotiabank Family Medicine Lectureship Award and the donation to Mme Jean by Dr Sandy Buchman, President of the CFPC; Dr Ralph Masi, Chair of the CFPC's Research and Education Foundation (REF) , Dr Calvin Gutkin Executive Director and CEO of the CFPC and the REF and a Scotiabank representative.
