MONTREAL, June 5, 2014 /CNW Telbec/ - The Québec Medical Association (QMA) welcomes the adoption of Bill 52 respecting end-of-life care. The QMA took active part in the debate surrounding this social issue to ensure that the Québec population has access to quality palliative care, and that the conditions used in end-of-life care are adequate while also respecting physicians' right to conscientious objection. In particular, the QMA submitted a brief to the parliamentary commission on Bill 52 last September. Many amendments that were made to the bill subsequent to the parliamentary commission were proposed by the QMA when it presented its brief.
The QMA would like to stress the importance of the adoption of this bill. The discussions occurred in an atmosphere of respect and calm, and with all the political parties. The members of the Québec National Assembly took part in this debate with the aim of offering appropriate end-of-life care for patients who meet the criteria.
"The QMA applauds all the provisions intended to increase the quality of and access to palliative care," stated QMA President Dr. Laurent Marcoux. "All citizens have the right to end-of-life care, including palliative care. Henceforth, patients will be able to decide on the conditions of their end-of-life care if they meet the criteria. As for physicians, they will be able to accompany their patients the entire time. This bill will transform the role of physicians because they will be able to openly discuss palliative care, anticipated medical directives and medically assisted death with their patients, families and health care teams. Furthermore, we are pleased that this legislative framework allows physicians to avail themselves of their right to conscientious objection."
