The Organ Project appoints Catherine Shaw as Chief Operating Officer

TORONTO, May 15, 2017 /CNW/ - Founder Eugene Melnyk today announced the appointment of Catherine Shaw as Chief Operating Officer of The Organ Project. Shaw brings a diverse set of management and operational skills having previously worked in health care, banking, pharmaceuticals, life sciences and hospital administration.

"The Organ Project has quickly become an important and influential voice in helping end the organ donor wait list in Canada and beyond.  We expect to see a notable and measurable positive impact on donor registration rates," said Ottawa Senators owner and Founder of The Organ Project, Eugene Melnyk. "Catherine brings an unparalleled level of passion and drive to helping our organization make a transformational difference in organ donation. Her leadership and operational expertise will accelerate The Organ Project's mandate to help more than 4,600 Canadians desperately waiting for life-saving organ transplants."

In April 2017, The Organ Project launched an extensive and thought-provoking national public awareness television and radio campaign which includes celebrity Morgan Freeman's universally recognizable voice. The campaign has aired prominently on Bell Media channels including during the nationally televised NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Additional television spots will be released as part of the national and North America-wide rollout of this campaign.

The Organ Project also hosted a sold out and highly successful inaugural fundraising gala featuring seven-time Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood. The highly anticipated gala raised nearly $1.4 million that will be invested into a number of important programs, policy initiatives as well as required website enhancements to accommodate the heavy traffic load to the site since the organization's highly successful public launch in February 2017.

Catherine Shaw officially joins The Organ Project after working with the charitable organization for the past three months in a consultancy capacity.  She began her career as a front-line nurse working with organ transplant patients at Toronto's world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children.  Shaw has worked in senior roles for Royal Bank of Canada, Eli Lily, MDS, E&Y and serving as Vice President of Redevelopment for the William Osler Health Centre.  Shaw has a BSc Nursing from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from Queen's University.
