The Historic Oxford Union Offers Its Programming For TV And VOD
The Most Influential Thinkers of Our Time Debating the Big Issues
LOS ANGELES, March 24, 2016 /CNW/ -- Approaching its 200th anniversary, the Oxford Union is aiming to promote debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. The organization is striving to raise awareness and tap into new audiences by offering its unique content for TV and VOD licensing for the first time.
"The Oxford Union has always been a forum for the highest caliber of speakers and debate, and this tradition is stronger than ever as the institution gets older," said President Robert Harris. "Distributing the professionally-filmed recordings of our events is the next step to help us engage with a contemporary global audience of millions."
Since its founding in 1823 as a forum for the discussion and debate of controversial issues, the world's most prestigious debating society has hosted international world leaders such as Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Malcolm X, Ronald Reagan, the Dalai Lama and Mother Teresa.
In 2012 the Union began filming every discussion and debate, assembling 150 hours of HD programming. Additionally, 100 hours of new programming will be available annually.
At the Oxford Union, world-renowned politicians, entertainers, religious leaders and scientists debate on both sides of engaging topics such as: Military Action Against ISIS, Does God Exist?, and Is Islam a Peaceful Religion?
"There are few, if any, forums that can boast not only the best speakers, but also a record of never shying away from debating difficult topics," Harris said. "The Oxford Union is proud to be one of those select few, the last bastion of free speech in a world where it is increasingly under threat."
Among the programs are thought-provoking discussions with Bill Maher, Jesse Jackson, Richard Dawkins, Malala Yousafzai, Morgan Freeman, Angela Davis, John Mayer, Sepp Blatter, Julian Assange, Hamid Karzai, Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau, Nancy Pelosi, Sir Ian McKellen, and scores of others who have influenced our world.
The Oxford Union is poised to experience a growth in awareness in the US having recently licensed audio-only versions of the Oxford Union catalog to Amazon-owned audiobook retailer Audible.
