Students Take Centre Stage at the 4th Annual Sears British Columbia Drama Festival
Keep Calm and Break a Leg
VANCOUVER, April 30, 2014 /CNW/ - The stage is set for another exciting Provincial Showcase of the Sears British Columbia Drama Festival. Organized by the Association of British Columbia Drama Educators (ABCDE) and sponsored by Sears Canada, more than 1,000 students and teachers from 50 secondary schools across BC participated in Zone Festivals during the last six months and some of the outstanding productions will be performed from May 1-4 at Douglas College in New Westminster.
"Sears Canada is proud to be the title sponsor of this world renowned youth theatre festival," said Doug Campbell, President and CEO, Sears Canada. "We believe that participating in after-school arts programs helps students learn important life-skills and build core values that will stay with them no matter what career path they follow."
The BC Festival is part of a trio of youth drama festivals, including the Sears Ontario Drama Festival, celebrating its 68th season, and the Sears Atlantic Drama Festival, celebrating its fourth season. The Sears Drama Festivals are part of the Company's commitment to supporting the healthy development of Canadian youth, in particular after-school enrichment programs, which also include Boys &Girls Clubs of Canada, 4-H, Scouts Canada and Girl Guides of Canada.
The province of British Columbia is divided into Drama Festival Zones, and each Zone organizes its own festival and an adjudicator chooses an outstanding production to be the representative production which then may be invited to attend the Provincial Festival. During the four-day Provincial Festival, students receive professional guidance through expert adjudication and have the opportunity to work with theatre professionals in special workshops.
"The Sears Drama Festival is a well established national youth program, enjoyed by thousands of students from across Canada and admired as a model for student involvement in theatre," said Wayne Fairhead, Executive Director, Sears Drama Festivals. "Our three festivals continue to grow in participant numbers each year, and I anticipate continued growth in the quality and variety of productions as well."
The public is invited to attend the plays this weekend, and tickets can be purchased for only $10 for an evening of theatre at www.searsbritishcolumbiadramafestival.com.
