Caolan will be taking over the reigns from long-time Brewmaster Conrad Gmoser. Conrad's finesse and inventiveness played a fundamental role in establishing Steamworks' street credibility as a serious microbrewery, starting back in 1996.
With international experience in the craft beer market, Caolan brings his own modern twist to craft brewing - having honed his skills first at Australia's Little Creatures brewery, and most recently at the UK's award-winning Thornbridge Brewery. There, Caolan played an integral part in the brewery's international reputation for producing world-class beers such as Jaipur IPAs, Raven BIPAs, Saint Petersburg Russian Imperial Stouts, in addition to hop forward and barrel aged beers.
"Our search for a new Brewmaster took us around the world," adds Steamworks Brewing Company President, Walter Cosman. "We wanted fresh ideas and someone not afraid to push beyond current conventions".
"With Caolan we've found someone who has brewed for some of the best, and we think he'll add even more excitement and creativity to our lineup of beer", Cosman adds.
No doubt, among the incentives inspiring Caolan to take his career to Vancouver, was the chance to be involved from the ground up, in the design and commissioning of Steamworks' new 50 Hectolitre Brewhouse located on the Vancouver/Burnaby border. Vaughan's experience in brewery production is expected to take the new facility quickly up to speed, and producing Steamworks' award winning Pilsner and Pale Ale, as well as a range of seasonal specialty beers. To commemorate the occasion, Vaughn and his team of brewers have selected Saison Ale as his first release this spring.
Caolan shares, "This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for me" adding, "I have a lot of respect for the craft-beer scene in the Pacific-Northwest and am eager for the opportunity to work with such a vibrant and well-respected team."
About Steamworks Brewing Company:
In 1995, when the team behind Steamworks Brewing Company first took hold of their historic, Gastown brewpub location, it was discovered that the building had a rare steam heating system - a remnant from forward thinkers of a century past. Inspired, Steamworks ventured forth, experimented and created a one-of-a-kind steam generated brewery; the only one in Canada. Since then, beer aficionados have been migrating to Steamworks brewpub for a taste of their unconventional beers. Now, with the launch of Steamworks bottled beers, customers can "take the brewpub home".
