Statement from Rick Hamilton, Mayor, City of Elliot Lake
Regarding the Report of the Elliot Lake Commission of Inquiry
ELLIOT LAKE, ON, Oct. 15, 2014 /CNW/ - On behalf of the City of Elliot Lake we would like to thank Commissioner Paul Bélanger for his final report into the Algo Centre Mall collapse. Our deepest condolences are with the families and friends of Mrs. Doloris Perizzolo and Ms. Lucie Aylwin.
Today's report provides the residents of Elliot Lake with the complete 35 year history of the mall and the opportunity to move forward after the tragic events on June 23, 2012.
Going forward, we are hopeful that the Commissioner's recommendations and the announcement by Ministers Meilleur and Naqvi will result in positive changes for municipalities across Ontario.
In the coming days, the City will thoroughly review the report and the recommendations and how best and most expeditiously to implement them. This will be a priority for the City including the duty to report progress within a year.
Finally, Commissioner Bélanger's report highlights the important role that the first responders played in the mall collapse rescue. On behalf of the City we want to thank the responders from Elliot Lake and those who came from neighbouring municipalities and throughout the province.
