MONTREAL, Feb. 11, 2019 /CNW Telbec/ - Sheila and I were very saddened to learn of Michael Wilson's passing and wish to extend our deepest condolences to his family and many friends.
Michael Wilson was a remarkable public servant, a historically important Minister of Finance, and a person of admirable integrity and decency. Canada was enriched by his time in office and I was truly lucky to be able to call him a friend.
As Minister of Finance Michael Wilson paved the way for the eventual elimination of the deficit by assessing the situation realistically and laying the groundwork for substantial changes in the tax system. His steadiness and courage in times of economic instability helped to turn a national tide of skepticism into a united front of confidence and consensus.
Michael Wilson's professional accomplishments in office alone could set him apart as an exceptional Canadian. However, due to personal tragedy, Mike went on to champion mental health in an era where stigma and silence were more commonplace. He used his position as a public figure to speak out for those whose burden was too heavy to carry alone.
Michael Wilson entered public life for the best of reasons. And he gave the best of himself.
