OTTAWA, Feb. 9, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - In light of recent media coverage concerning the Province of Prince Edward Island's new Grandparents and Care Providers program, the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue, issued the following statement:
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) understands that credits and benefits, such as the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), are important to those who receive them. This is why the CRA is working in close collaboration with provinces and territories in order to ensure that all Canadians have access to the credits and benefits to which they are entitled. From July 2016 up to and including January 2018, Prince Edward Island (PEI) received $159,220,000 in CCB payments, representing a significant benefit to families across the province.
There is no revision of the CCB underway at the CRA. The CCB is an income-tested benefit, which provides eligible families with non-taxable financial support.
The CRA is reviewing the draft information on the program submitted by the PEI government on February 7 in an effort to address the Province's concerns about the impacts of their Grandparents and Care Providers program. The Agency will continue a dialogue with PEI officials to provide information and assistance in a timely manner, and looks forward to holding more productive discussions.
