OTTAWA, ON, Oct. 2, 2026 /CNW/ -- Today, the Honourable Eleanor Olszewski, Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada, issued the following statement:
"From October 4th to 10th, Canada marks Fire Prevention Week with a reminder that fire safety starts with the actions we take every day.
Fires can start in an instant, but their impacts can last a lifetime. Every year, fires affect families, homes, workplaces, and businesses in communities across the country. In recent years, Canadians have witnessed the devastating effects of increasingly severe wildfire seasons. To all the Canadian and international firefighters, fire safety leaders and first responders who work to keep our communities safe – I am incredibly grateful for your dedication and bravery. On behalf of all Canadians, I sincerely thank you for your service.
This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is "Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower". The theme highlights the safe use and charging of lithium-ion batteries, which power many everyday devices, including cell phones, laptops, tablets, toys, power tools, e-bikes and scooters. Simple charging habits can help reduce the risk of battery fires. Use manufacturer-approved equipment, keep charging areas clear, and watch for signs of battery damage. I encourage everyone to learn more about the safe use, storage and charging of lithium-ion batteries.
Staying safe is more than having active smoke alarms. It is critically important to also have an emergency plan and kit in your home, and to stay informed about wildfire conditions in your area. These critical steps can help keep you and your family safe. This Fire Prevention Week, I encourage everyone to take practical steps to help prevent fires at home and in their communities. Together, we can build safer and more resilient communities.
