Statement by Hon. Brian Tobin on the passing of Art May
OTTAWA, Jan. 30, 2014 /CNW/ - Art May was truly one of Newfoundland and Labrador's most accomplished leaders. His contribution to marine science and fisheries management in multiple roles including his service as Deputy Minister of Fisheries stands him in the front ranks of those who have given public service to our province. As a young MP representing a fishing constituency and subsequently as a Parliamentary Secretary to Romeo Leblanc while Art May was deputy Minister, I was mentored by Art through the learning curve of my duties. He was kind, caring and demanding of everyone on the team. He was subsequently the President of Memorial University during my time as Premier. His leadership together with Chancellor John Crosbie undertook and executed a highly successful fund raising campaign that led to the construction of important new facilities and programs for Memorial. His many contributions to our province and to Canada will resonate for years to come. He will be missed.
