Statement by Astaldi Canada about Nalcor's actions and their effects on Muskrat Falls workers
HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, NL, Oct. 24, 2018 /CNW/ - "Astaldi Canada remains fully committed to the Muskrat Falls hydro megaproject, and to the 800-plus workers who are currently playing an essential role in its construction.
"Recent actions by Nalcor, however, have placed Astaldi Canada in an impossible position. Sadly, those actions will ultimately end up hurting the proud men and women who have worked so hard to successfully build the project.
"What this means for Astaldi's workers is that this week's payroll will likely be delayed. While Nalcor has collected sufficient money to pay workers, it is now withholding that money from Astaldi.
"We call on Nalcor to release these funds immediately to ensure that Astaldi's workers are paid.
"Additionally, Nalcor's unjustified eviction of Astaldi from the project site will also result in layoffs on Friday of this week.
"By effectively evicting Astaldi from the Muskrat Falls site, Astaldi is required under labour law to issue layoff notices by this Friday, for approximately 800 affected workers.
"Nalcor's willingness to play games with the livelihood of workers and their families is both appalling and callous.
"Astaldi Canada calls on Nalcor to release funds immediately so workers can be paid what they are owed, and the Muskrat Falls project can be completed promptly."
