OTTAWA, Oct. 13, 2016 /CNW/ - The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement to congratulate António Guterres on becoming the next United Nations Secretary General:
"On behalf of all Canadians, I am delighted to extend my congratulations to Antόnio Guterres on his appointment by the United Nations General Assembly to be the next United Nations Secretary General, beginning in January 2017.
"Canada firmly believes that the United Nations is essential to resolving many of the world's most pressing challenges – from climate change, to refugees and migration, to securing peace.
"Early next year, Mr. Guterres takes on one of the most challenging jobs in the world. Canada will be there to help him and the UN make the world a better place for its 7.5 billion inhabitants.
"We have worked closely with Mr. Guterres during his time as UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and we look forward to working with him in his new capacity as Secretary General."
