Statement - Minister McKenna pleased to see Alberta taking leadership on climate

OTTAWA, Nov. 22, 2015 /CNW/ - On behalf of the Government of Canada, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, welcomed Alberta Premier Rachel Notley's climate change policy announcement today.

"This is a strong, positive step in the right direction. We want to send a clear signal to Canadians and our partners around the world that Canada is back and ready to play our part. Premier Notley's new plan for Alberta is a real and vital contribution to that effort."

"Alberta is taking a leadership position on phasing out coal, and as Minister of Environment and Climate Change, I will be looking at ways to help accelerate the reduction of coal power right across the country.

"Renewable energy also continues to be a huge opportunity in Canada. We are committed to working with provinces and territories to further expand the development and use of renewable energy. This, along with energy efficiency, is a priority area which I look forward to working on with my counterparts across the country.

"The Government of Canada will work closely with the provinces and territories to take action on climate change, put a price on carbon, reduce emissions and invest in clean technologies.

"After the Paris Conference, we will again meet with the provinces and work together toward a pan-Canadian framework where we can collaboratively advance concrete actions to tackle climate change.

"This framework and all of our actions will be guided by the best available economic and scientific analysis."
