Siemens tops Corporate Knights 13th annual Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations list
DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 17, 2017 /CNW/ - Corporate Knights, the Canadian-based media and research company, today released the 2017 Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World (Global 100) ranking. The ranking is featured in the winter issue of Corporate Knights, the magazine for clean capitalism.
Companies that make the Global 100 ranking are the top overall sustainability performers in their respective industrial sectors, selected from a starting universe of 4,973 listed companies with a market capitalization greater than $2 billion (USD) as of October 1, 2016.
"Global 100 companies are powerful exponents of the idea that doing better by society and the planet can be financially rewarding as well," said Toby Heaps, CEO of Corporate Knights. The Global 100 index (which is equally weighted and sector neutral) commenced on February 1, 2005. From inception to December 31, 2016, it delivered a cumulative return of 132 per cent compared to 108 per cent for its benchmark, the MSCI All Country World Index.
The top-ranked company in this year's Global 100 index is Siemens AG. Headquartered in Munich, Germany, Siemens is an electrical engineering and electronics company at the heart of solutions for renewable energy, mass transit, and smarter cities. Siemens turned in top-quartile performance against peers for its efficient use of energy and water, responsible approach to paying taxes, large innovation investments, low employee turnover and strong female board representation.
European/UK firms dominated the list accounting for 59 of the Global 100 firms. This was followed by 25 from North America, 12 from Asia, 2 each from Eurasia and South America and none from Africa.
