Sheridan College Campuses will be smoke-free as of October 17, 2018
OAKVILLE, ON, Oct. 12, 2018 /CNW/ - Sheridan has adopted a new smoke-free policy, which will see all of its campuses become 100% smoke-free as of October 17, 2018.
As such, smoking any form of tobacco and/or cannabis, vaping and use of e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (commonly known as chewing tobacco) will not be permitted anywhere on Sheridan campuses as of October 17, 2018. The new policy accords with Ontario legislation which makes consumption of recreational cannabis in the workplace illegal. In accordance with applicable legislation and the Workplace Accommodation Policy, Sheridan will provide accommodation for the medical use of cannabis.
Sheridan has been working towards attaining smoke-free status since 2012, when we introduced designated smoking shelters at our Oakville and Brampton campuses. Our Hazel McCallion Campus in City of Mississauga has always been smoke-free, due to its location on City-owned lands and the need to comply with City by-laws.
The college had been working towards implementing our new Smoke Free Sheridan Policy in the Spring of 2019, however, the provincial government's recent announcement of its intent to allow the use of cannabis wherever tobacco smoking is permitted prompted us to move up our implementation date, to coincide with the legalization of recreational cannabis.
Sheridan is committed to promoting a healthy and safe working, living and learning environment for all of our community members. At the same time, we realize that the use of tobacco and related products is a personal one. For those members of our community who are interested in quitting or reducing their consumption, we are providing them with information on a variety of internal and external resources to assist in their journey.
