Semiahmoo First Nation Media Statement Regarding: Financial Transparency Act Publication of Salaries for 2013-2014

VANCOUVER, Aug. 15, 2015 /CNW/ - There has been a lot of interest in Semiahmoo First Nation and our leaders in recent days following publication of salaries in 2013-14 via the First Nations Transparency Act.

Chief Willard Cook and Councillors Joanne Charles and Roxanne Charles are accountable to members of the Semiahmoo First Nation, and are taking time to talk to them now and over the coming days to make sure members are happy with how business is being handled.

A further statement will then be made available on Wednesday, August 19th. In the meantime, we will release any other information as it becomes available and ask that we are given the time, space and respect to go through this process.

As Chief Councillor, Willard Cook was paid $267,309 in 2013-14. As Councillor, Joanne Charles was paid $187,138. Councillor Roxanne Charles was paid $4,725.

It is important to understand that the majority of this money comes from revenue that has been generated on behalf of the Nation, and negotiations on some of these agreements are ongoing.

Examples of sources of revenue for our Nation in 2013-14 included:

  • Our Economic Development Company, which is responsible for leasing
  • Accommodation and Impact Benefit Agreements (IBAs)
  • Other sources include Provincial-based archaeological work

The Semiahmoo First Nations team, including Chief Willard Cook and Councillors Joanne Charles and Roxanne Charles, have been working hard to bring in the money needed to build a strong future for our Nation and our people. It is through this hard work that our surplus was increased from $1.2m to $4.3m from 2013-14. Over the next year or two, we will be improving the infrastructure for the Nation.
