Sears Canada Extends Fundraising Campaign in Quebec to Help the People of Lac-Mégantic

TORONTO, July 16, 2013 /CNW/ - The train derailment tragedy in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, has affected and touched families, friends and businesses in the town and outlying region.  Sears Canada (TSX: SCC) extends its condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and hopes the community's recovery process is as smooth as possible under the circumstances.

The Red Cross is on the scene with a task force and recovery effort aiding victims of the disaster, helping family, friends and loved ones cope with the immediate material and emotional damage and longer-term recovery ahead.

To make the fundraising that supports the Lac-Mégantic Red Cross recovery initiative more convenient, Sears is continuing to accept donations at all Sears Canada retail stores in the province of Québec. In-store, donations in denominations of $1 or $10 may be made by cash or any major credit card. Upon request a tax receipt can be issued by the Red Cross for donations of $10 or more for donations made on a Sears Card or Sears MasterCard, as Sears can only pass on information to the Red Cross from Sears credit card holders, with their permission.  Donations made on a Sears Card or Sears MasterCard can earn valuable Sears Club points.  Sears Canada is also making a corporate donation to the Canadian Red Cross to aid with the recovery effort.

In addition to fundraising and a monetary donation, Sears Canada has given men's, women's and children's clothing to people living in Lac-Mégantic whose homes were destroyed or who were evacuated from their homes.  Sears will continue to work with both the Red Cross and Salvation Army in Quebec to provide merchandise to local residents as they return to their homes and find new ones.

Sears acknowledges Jean Lacroix, the Sears catalogue agent and owner of Chaussures Pop in Lac-Mégantic.  Mr. Lacroix, whose family has owned the shoe business for 82 years and is a leader in the community, lost his store on July 6.  We are pleased to hear from him that he and his wife were not harmed in the incident.
