Residents to benefit from a soil remediation project in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and a wastewater upgrade project in the Town of Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, NS, Aug. 1, 2019 /CNW/ - The governments of Canada and Nova Scotia recognize that strategic investments in green and local wastewater infrastructure play a key role in supporting dynamic, healthy communities while improving residents' quality of life and protecting the environment.

Today, the Honourable Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Rural Economic Development, and Member of Parliament for South Shore-St. Margaret's; the Honourable Mark Furey, Minister of Justice for Nova Scotia; and Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Lunenburg announced funding to support the Riverport School remediation project and the Bridgewater wastewater treatment upgrades.

These projects consist of the decontamination of the former Riverport School property in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, and of upgrades to the existing wastewater systems in the Town of Bridgewater.

Once these projects are completed, Municipality of the District of Lunenburg residents will benefit from a cleaner local environment and better quality soil, and residents in Bridgewater will see a cleaner and safer environment for wastewater elimination.

The Government of Canada is contributing over $2.6 million to the projects through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan. The Nova Scotia government is contributing over $2.2 million.

• Through the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan, the Government of Canada will invest more than $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
• $26.9 billion of this funding is supporting green infrastructure projects, including $5 billion available for investment through the Canada Infrastructure Bank.
