Réseau Sélection and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts partner to offer seniors free museum admission and artistic and educational activities

Les Beaux-jeudis du MBAM :
A new weekly cultural event, every Thursday starting October 1

MONTREAL, Sept. 21, 2015 /CNW Telbec/ - To mark the International Day of Older Persons on Thursday, October 1, 2015, Réseau Sélection, in partnership with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA), Canada's most popular museum with more than a million visitors per year, will be launching a brand-new weekly program for seniors: Les Beaux-jeudis du MBAM.

Starting on that date, anyone age 65 and over can receive free admission to the museum's collections from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm every Thursday. At the inaugural, October 1 edition of this event, seniors can also take two special guided tours and apply their artistic talents in a drawing workshop with live models. Over the coming three years, a wide variety of innovative activities will be offered as part of this program every Thursday.

Danielle Champagne, director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Foundation, explains, "We decided to partner with Réseau Sélection because it has such an innovative approach to well-being for seniors. We then worked with the company to design dynamic, original activities suited to the new generations of people age 65 and over who are active, curious, and eager for new knowledge to help them keep growing as individuals."

The goals of this program are to promote and stimulate retirees' cognitive health and help them to remain socially active by offering them a variety of interesting cultural activities.

"At any age, the chance to discover, to learn, and to maintain a sense of wonder can enrich life immeasurably," says Réal Bouclin, President of Réseau Sélection. "That is why we are offering our residents and tenants, as well as all senior citizens, this highly rewarding activity, which will definitely enhance their well-being and their quality of life."

Réseau Sélection is delighted to be partnering with the Canadian museum with the highest attendance. The new Beaux-jeudis initiative will directly support Réseau Sélection's healthyid program, which offers a way of life that focuses on prevention and on promoting healthy lifestyle choices, thus encouraging an active retirement.

"One of the key themes of our healthyid approach is to promote continued cognitive health as well as what we call social health: the ability to maintain a social network and engage in activities that prevent seniors from becoming isolated," says Luc Lepage, Réseau Sélection's Vice-President, Health. "A concept like Les Beaux-jeudis encourages seniors to improve their health and their quality of life and to continue doing what they like, completely independently."

About the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is experiencing tremendous growth. For the second year in a row, it has had the highest attendance of any museum in Canada. Every year, over 1 million people visit its encyclopedic collection--the only one of its kind in Canada—and its original temporary exhibitions, which feature innovative designs and cross artistic disciplines including fine arts, music, film, fashion, and design. Many of the exhibitions that the museum designs and produces tour Europe and North America. The MMFA is also one of Canada's leading publishers of art books in English and French, which are distributed worldwide.

Fall 2011 saw the opening of a fourth pavilion at the museum—the Claire and Marc Bourgie Pavilion of Quebec and Canadian Art—along with Bourgie Hall, a 444-seat professional concert venue housing an outstanding collection of Tiffany stained glass windows. Music is now an integral part of the museum, offering visitors another perspective on the visual arts through musical audio guides and other innovative activities. The Studios Art & Éducation Michel de la Chenelière, which opened in 2012, have doubled the museum's facilities for schools, families and community groups, which are used by nearly 300 000 people every year. A fifth building—the Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace, devoted to international art and education, will open its doors in late 2016 for Montreal's 375th anniversary.
