LOS ANGELES, Feb. 14, 2014 /CNW/ - Producer-director John Albanis is announcing his upcoming short film, "Nova," is complete and bound for the independent film festival circuit this spring.
Directed by Albanis and produced by his own Symerra Productions, "Nova" is a sci-fi thriller with an epic feel and powerful special effects. Written by Josh Flint and co-produced by Mehernaz Lentin ("Bollywood/Hollywood"), the story follows an ordinary man who takes on the characteristics of a supernova.
"It's a visual essay about the cyclical nature of societal mass consumption," Albanis said. "It's a spectacle short film piece. Short films always have to be breaking new ground. That's the point of them."
Canadian actor Reid Morgan ("Casino Jack") plays Aaron, the lead protagonist. Simon Mestel, renowned for his commercials, handled cinematography for "Nova." Emmy Award nominee Mike Jackson ("Beyond Top Secret") is editing the film and sound mixing is by Oscar winner Mark Paterson ("Les Misérables").
Albanis describes "Nova" as a passion project that's been in the works for five years. Shot in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Albanis was awarded a $20,000 production grant from BravoFACT to create the film.
"Nova" is the fifth short film from Albanis, who previously directed the short thriller, "Psychic Driving," starring Shea Whigham ("Silver Linings Playbook") and Sarah Clarke ("Twilight"). Albanis' directorial debut came with "Checkpoint Six," a film that premiered at the Calgary International Film Festival. He later directed the short, "Sophia," which is currently being developed into a feature film.
Albanis has associate produced A&E's TV movie, "Walking Shadow," TNT's Primetime Emmy nominated "Monte Walsh" starring Tom Selleck, Disney's "Hannah Montana: The Movie" starring Miley Cyrus, MGM's "Hot Tub Time Machine" starring John Cusack and the "Jesse Stone" trilogy starring Tom Selleck.
Albanis co-produced the forthcoming film, "Hector and the Search for Happiness," starring Simon Pegg ("Shaun of the Dead"), Rosamund Pike ("Die Another Day"), Toni Collette ("The Sixth Sense"), Stellan Skarsgård ("Good Will Hunting"), Jean Reno ("Léon: The Professional") and Oscar winner Christopher Plummer ("Beginners").
