TORONTO, Sept. 25, 2013 /CNW/ - Ontario kids will have a valuable opportunity to enjoy real food education through a new program that helps them embrace the joy of eating healthy food and bring good eating habits home.
Hellmann's®, with help from Field Trip Factory™, a leader in experience-based education, is giving schools and other organizations in Ontario a chance to sign up for the free Real Food Trips™ program held at local grocery stores starting in September 2013. Real Food Trips will provide fun, guided, hands-on learning that is consistent with local teaching standards and Canada's Food Guide. With help from a Registered Dietitian, kids will learn about food nutrition labels, nutrients and how to make healthy food choices.
Bringing Real Food Lessons Home
The Real Food Trips program will help fill a learning gap by delivering experiences that nurture healthy eating habits in kids, while removing the burden and much of the cost from schools or other groups, who need only cover the cost of transportation. The program is the latest initiative under the Real Food Movement™.
"Through our work with the Real Food Movement we've heard from schools and other groups who'd like to offer hands-on food education programs for kids, but who find the cost to be an obstacle," says Alison Leung, Brand Director for Hellmann's. "At the same time we've learned that these types of experiential programs can be a powerful way of helping kids embrace good eating habits which they then bring home to their families."
A recent Hellmann's survey found that almost a third (31%) of Canadian children admit to having thrown out some of their lunch items. It also found that children who learn about food are less likely to throw out part of their lunches.
Since launching in 2007, the Real Food Movement has helped Canadian families discover the pleasure that comes from eating real food, by planting Urban Gardens, conducting local food awareness programs and awarding more than $320,000 in Real Food Grants across Canada. The Real Food Trips program will continue this mission, while increasing the number of kids who can enjoy practical real food learning experiences.
