MISSISSAUGA, ON, Feb. 18, 2014 /CNW/ - Today, Dr. Sven Spengemann (47) announced that he will seek the federal Liberal nomination in Mississauga South. "I am passionate about public service, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with the people of Mississauga South to make our community the best that it can be."
Sven's announcement has triggered a sense of excitement among fellow Liberals.
"I've worked with Sven Spengemann in the Liberal Party as well as on governance issues in Iraq," says the Hon. Bob Rae, "He's a fine man and would make a great MP."
Prateek Sanyal, student organizer and President of the University of Toronto (Mississauga) (UTM) Young Liberals, observes that, "In politics it is rare to find men like Sven. If his portfolio does not leave you awestruck, his humility will. I am honoured to support him in his decision to seek the nomination."
Sven served in the Government of Canada's Privy Council Office and spent a number of years working on Bay Street, in the financial and legal services industries. In 2005, Sven was recruited by the United Nations to join the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) in Baghdad, where he served until July 2012, in both legal and political capacities.
"Sven embodies the Canadian values of service and compassion and has demonstrated leadership in bringing people together," said Dr. Lorna Marsden, President Emerita of York University and a former member of the Senate of Canada, "His campaign will bring tremendous value to the Liberal Party."
Most recently, Sven has served as a Director of the United Way of Peel Region and the UTM Alumni Association, an Advisor to the Peel Multicultural Council, and an active volunteer with Mississauga's The Compass Food Bank.
Born in Berlin, Germany, Sven moved to Mississauga at age 14 with his family and settled in the Credit Woodlands area. He attended Woodlands Secondary, served in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets' 845 Squadron and graduated from UTM. Sven holds law degrees from Osgoode Hall and the College of Europe and a doctorate from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Bar of Ontario.
