SAINT JOHN, NB, Aug. 17 /CNW Telbec/ - His Honour the Honourable Graydon Nicholas, Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, Deputy Minister of Public Safety William Baker, National Parole Board Chair, Harvey Cenaiko, and Former Assembly of First Nations Chief Phil Fontaine, are a few of the speakers and presenters to present at the 21st annual conference for the Canadian Association of Police Boards (CAPB) beginning Thursday, August 19. The conference is hosted by the Saint John Board of Police Commissioners and the City of Saint John.

More than 175 delegates are expected to gather for what is considered essential training for police board members. Participants register for both the educational and networking opportunities and for the strong grassroots and civilian perspective CAPB brings to critical policing issues. This year's conference theme is 'Navigating the Way to an Affordable, Effective Future of Public Policing'. Panel sessions include Reforming First Nations Policing, Harassment and Discrimination in Police Agencies and updates from National Parole Board And Corrections Canada.

The conference begins with a golf tournament at the Rockwood Park Golf Club on Wednesday, August 18. Saint John Police Chief William Reid will host 'Cops for Cancer Concert' at Saint John High School on Wednesday evening. Both the tournament and concert are fundraisers for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The conference officially kicks off at 8:45 am at the Saint John Trade & Convention Centre. On Thursday evening at the historic Imperial Theatre, Lieutenant Governor Graydon Nicholas and Phil Fontaine will be on stage followed by an evening showcasing local entertainment.

CAPB is made up of volunteer members of police commissions and boards across Canada. They provide civilian governance and oversight of municipal police services including hiring and evaluating the chief of police and approving police budgets.
