DOLLARD-DES-ORMEAUX, QC, March 14, 2016 /CNW Telbec/ - With the national Brain Awareness Week starting on Monday, there is a great deal of interest about the brain and nervous system from the media and the public.
The people of Quebec can feel reassured to know that more than thirty therapists from Action Sport Physio are now the very first in the province to be certified by CCMI, the most important concussion care network in Canada, after completing a training session in Montreal a month ago. The Complete Concussion Management program provides major league protocols for diagnosing and managing concussion injuries to amateur athletes in the province.
An accompanying app allows for an athlete "passport" to be created – allowing coaches to know whether an athlete on their team has suffered a concussion injury playing another sport that they would otherwise be unaware of (helping to avoid risks of second impact syndrome).
CCMI
The Toronto-based founder of the concussion program realized that health professionals were not trained to diagnose concussions, so he created the CCMI program, designed to teach how to better manage concussions, avoid post-concussion syndrome and provide several tips to help people who have been suffering from symptoms for more than 30 days.
The Concussion Dilemma
The main challenge with concussions is that it is difficult to determine when the energy deficit has been restored and athletic activity can be safely resumed without risk. With baseline concussion testing, concussion diagnosis and treatment, a return to school or sport is safe so parents and coaches are all on the same page.
