Putting People First Puts Johnson Inc. At The Top

ST. JOHN'S, Oct. 8 /CNW/ - St. John's-based Johnson Inc. is pleased to be named one of Canada's Top 100 Employers for 2010.

"We are very proud to be one of Canada's Top 100 Employers," said Johnson Inc. President Ken Bennett. "Built on a legacy of family values, Johnson is a household name in Newfoundland and Labrador. What began as a small, family-owned business is now a national success story. We have a strong entrepreneurial culture at Johnson. Our people are engaged in the business and everyone has an opportunity to add value and directly contribute to the success of the company."

Johnson Inc. opened its doors in St. John's almost 130 years ago. Today, the company has grown and is part of the global RSA group. As part of RSA, Johnson Inc. is able to leverage sophisticated Human Resources best practices and combine them with its entrepreneurial culture and customer focus.

"Our people are important to us and while we offer our employees a number of attractive benefits, we also understand that communication is vital," said Alex Griffiths, Interim Vice-President, Human Resources. "We listen to what our people have to say and take action at both corporate and individual team levels balancing the needs of our people and our customers."

Now in its 10th year, the Canada's Top 100 Employers competition recognizes employers that are industry leaders at attracting and retaining employees. This annual competition is organized by Mediacorp Canada Inc. In compiling this year's Top 100 list, Mediacorp examined the recruitment histories of over 75,000 employers across Canada. From this initial group, Mediacorp invited 16,000 of the fastest-growing employers to apply, plus another 8,000 companies and organizations in industries that it wanted to examine more closely. Over 2,600 employers started this year's application process.

Winners are graded on eight key areas: (1) Physical Workplace; (2) Work Atmosphere & Social; (3) Health, Financial & Family Benefits; (4) Vacation & Time Off; (5) Employee Communications; (6) Performance Management; (7) Training & Skills Development; and, (8) Community Involvement. This year's study found that stability and continuity in the workplace are what's most important to the Canadian workforce and that traditional benefits are what's continuing to make a difference in the lives of employees.

With origins dating back to 1880, Johnson Inc. is one of the oldest and most respected insurance and benefit providers in Canada.
