Keep driveways and tanks clear to ensure a reliable supply of propane
OTTAWA, Feb. 23, 2015 /CNW/ - As parts of Canada experience long stretches of extremely cold temperatures and heavy snowfall, the Canadian Propane Association (CPA) is reminding propane users to ensure that their driveways, roads, laneways and tanks are clear of snow and ice.
"The propane industry works hard to ensure a reliable supply of energy to their customers," says CPA General Manager, Andrea Labelle. "Leading up to this winter, distributors ordered additional supplies, upgraded monitoring systems to better predict demand, and added storage capacity. In fact, at the beginning of this winter, inventories were the highest they had been in eight years and February's inventories are more than double the average of the last five Februarys. The industry also proactively distributed tips to consumers in the fall on preparing for winter and conserving energy."
Propane companies are committed to doing their part, and are asking their customers to be their partners to stay warm this winter. Propane users are encouraged to plow their lanes and driveways and keep their tanks clear of snow and ice, which will help improve accessibility and driver safety, and speed up propane deliveries. "Delivery drivers want to keep customers warm and make timely deliveries, but they need the homeowner's help to keep the area clear so that they can make the delivery. During a high-demand time such as winter, one delay can affect all subsequent deliveries," adds Labelle.
The Canadian Propane Association also advises homeowners to clear snow and ice from propane tanks and outdoor vents, chimneys, and flues, which will reduce the potential for frozen pipes or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. It is also important to install CO detectors on every level of a home, to never use a gas oven or range-top burners to provide space heating, and never use portable heaters indoors unless they are designed and approved for indoor use.
"Keeping Canadians who rely on propane warm and safe is our highest priority. And while we can't stop winter's wrath, the CPA and our members are committed to partnering with Canadians to implement strategies that will allow us to stay warm inside when Mother Nature is doing her worst outside," says Labelle.
