Prime Minister Carney deepens partnerships with Commonwealth nations across trade, investment, and climate action
FrançaisST. JOHN'S, Antigua and Barbuda, Nov. 3, 2026 /CNW/ -- The world is changing rapidly. Global trade is being rewired and the institutions that underpinned our security for decades are under threat. In response, Canada is focused on what we can control: building our strength and diversifying our partnerships abroad. Bound by strong people-to-people ties, shared values, and increasingly shared interests and ambitions, Commonwealth countries are natural partners in this mission.
To advance this mission, the Prime Minister, Mark Carney, participated in the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The Commonwealth brings together 56 nations from every region of the globe, including some of the world's fastest-growing economies. This vast network provides a powerful platform for countries to act together – to address the world's most pressing shared challenges and seize new opportunities for their people.
At CHOGM, the Prime Minister hosted a meeting with Caribbean leaders to build momentum for the renewed Canada-CARICOM Strategic Partnership. He underscored the Caribbean's importance as Canada's regional neighbour and focused on the opportunities for our nations to strengthen collective resilience in the hemisphere. The leaders discussed how best to deepen cooperation in key sectors, including energy, food security, regional security, and infrastructure. They also explored ways to help countries prepare for and respond to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters.
To these ends, the Prime Minister announced more than $70 million in new investments to strengthen resilience across the Commonwealth, including the Caribbean. These investments will help build stronger infrastructure, improve emergency preparedness operations, restore forest ecosystems, and enable the rapid dispatch of emergency relief. Together with our Commonwealth partners, Canada is building a more secure, more resilient, more prosperous future for all.
Quote
"As Canada charts its path forward in this new world, we look to our fellow Commonwealth members as partners. Across continents and under different skies, we are united by shared history, values, and, increasingly, ambitions. In an increasingly fragmented world, we are acting together to create greater security, opportunity, and prosperity for our peoples."
-- The Rt. Hon. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada
