Suits star Sarah Rafferty and the Honourable Rona Ambrose join #GirlsBelongHere festivities
TORONTO, Oct. 11, 2017 /CNW/ - Suits star and Plan International Canada Celebrated Ambassador, Sarah Rafferty, author and former Conservative Leader, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, and Plan International Canada President and CEO, Caroline Riseboro, joined a group of youth ambassadors to ring the closing bell at the Toronto Stock Exchange and round out the sixth International Day of the Girl.
The bell-ringing was followed by an intimate roundtable discussion between Sarah Rafferty, Caroline Riseboro, and a group of passionate young advocates for gender equality on the power of ambitious career aspirations and why it's important for girls to dream big. The group engaged in a critical dialogue on the "dream gap" – a combination of gender stereotypes, discrimination and negative perceptions that can prevent girls from realizing their dreams – and addressed solutions to overcome these barriers.
This event concluded Plan International Canada's International Day of the Girl celebrations and highlighted the impact of the #GirlsBelongHere initiative. Through #GirlsBelongHere, a diverse group of young women from across the country stepped into their dream jobs for a day to meaningfully illustrate every girl's right to realize her potential.

About International Day of the Girl
In 2009, Plan International Canada led an extensive two-year campaign that engaged thousands of Canadians in a call for an International Day of the Girl as part of Because I am a Girl, a global initiative to end gender inequality and recognize girls' rights as human rights. In December 2011, with unanimous all-party support, the Canadian government led the United Nations to officially declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl.
