PEAK Home Ownership Program Expands
Innovative Funding Initiative Makes the Dream of Home Ownership a Reality for Hardworking Calgarians
CALGARY, March 21, 2012 /CNW/ - Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta, and the Trico Charitable Foundation announced today that 60 units in Trico Communities York 29 development will now be available through the Peak Home Ownership Program. The program provides qualified applicants mortgage assistance and a repayable down payment of up to $43 thousand, making homeownership an affordable reality for many families.
"With the PEAK Home Ownership Program, we have been able to help more families achieve homeownership," says Leslie Tamagi, President and CEO, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta, which administers the program and selects the qualified applicants. "In its inaugural year, we were able to provide 64 local families a "hand-up" to affordable homeownership in Trico's Milano development, and with York 29, we are now making the program available for another 60 families."
The Government of Alberta is contributing $2.7 million to the program through a Housing Capital Initiatives grant and the Trico Charitable Foundation is donating an additional $815 thousand. "The Peak Home Ownership program is a perfect example of how the Alberta government is partnering with the non-profit and private sectors to increase the supply of affordable housing across the province, said Doug Griffiths, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "Building stronger more vibrant communities starts with families having an affordable place to call home." Griffiths added.
York 29 is a 188 unit townhome development now under construction in the SE community of New Brighton. The program is designed for families, singles and households in need of attainable housing.
PEAK is an acronym for Public, Essential and Key workforce, which is the program's core applicant base. This represents a broad swath of low and middle-income families that without a "hand-up" may never be able to afford their own home. "These are our nurses, firefighters, skilled tradespeople and service managers, said Mr. Wayne Chiu, founder of Trico Homes and Chair of the Trico Charitable Foundation. "They are essential to our community and deserve the opportunity to have their own home," Chiu added.
