Ottawa student receives scholarship from The UPS Foundation
OTTAWA, Aug. 17 /CNW/ - Tania Iraheta, 18 years old, a recent graduate of St. Patrick's high school in Ottawa, has been chosen as one of 46 winners of a George D. Smith Scholarship, an annual award presented by The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The scholarships are awarded to children of full-time and part-time UPS employees.
George D. Smith scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $4,000 for each year of school. Scholarships are given to students who plan to enter accredited business schools, junior colleges or vocational/technical programs of two years or less, or who pursue two-year associate degree programs in colleges and universities. Winners are selected through a nationwide competition by Scholarship America.
"Education is the first of many steps toward a successful future," said Ken Sternad, president of The UPS Foundation. "We are proud to support the children of UPS employees as they work toward their dreams."
Scholarship winner, Tania Iraheta, daughter of Guillermo and Milena Iraheta-Rivas, will attend Algonquin College, in Ottawa, in the fall. Her father is an administrative assistant at UPS.
Iraheta has received a number of certificates in the arts and several medals for soccer and running competitions - all while maintaining her place on the Honour Roll. Outside of school, Iraheta also gives back to her community by volunteering with Breakfast for Cancer.
Iraheta was awarded her scholarship certificate by Roland Payne, Division Manager, Capital Division, in a ceremony at the UPS centre in Ottawa on June 10.
Established in 1983, the George D. Smith Scholarship is named for the former UPS chief executive who succeeded Jim Casey, the company's founder. Since its inception, 1,010 George D. Smith Scholarships have been awarded, totaling more than $2.5 million.
