Doing Politics Differently: My Vision for Canada
By Maxime Bernier, in collaboration with Martin Masse
TORONTO, April 10, 2018 /CNW/ - Optimum Publishing International is pleased to announce the release of Chapter Five of Maxime Bernier's upcoming book, Doing Politics Differently: My Vision for Canada.
In this chapter, entitled "Live or Die with Supply Management," Bernier tells the story of how and why supply management, one of the great taboos of Canadian politics, came to play a central role in his campaign for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, and contributed both to its success and his defeat. He also lists all the major economic reasons for scrapping this costly, inefficient, and unjust system.
With the NAFTA negotiations nearing a conclusion, and with a new agreement possibly including a chapter dealing with supply management, Optimum's publisher, Dean Baxendale, thought it important to make the content of this chapter available to the Canadian public ahead of the book's publication in the fall of 2018.
Right after Donald Trump's election to the presidency, Maxime Bernier was the first one to suggest using supply management as a bargaining chip in the NAFTA renegotiation promised by Trump. In April 2017, Bernier wrote an open letter to Trump in the Globe and Mail to argue it would be advantageous for consumers and producers in both countries if he dismantled his tariff wall against Canadian softwood lumber, while we got rid of our restrictions on agricultural imports. Finally, in October 2017, the US government officially demanded an end to supply management as part of the negotiations.
"Canadians should know why it's in everybody's interest that supply management be dismantled as part of a renewed NAFTA treaty. And they should also be aware of Maxime's role in bringing this issue to the forefront," explains Baxendale. "This is a compelling chapter but there is a lot more to come in the book."
Today, Optimum is releasing the chapter on its website at www.optimumpublishinginternational.com/ The Globe and Mail and La Presse also received an embargoed copy of the chapter and are publishing excerpts today.
