TORONTO, June 15, 2020 /CNW/ - With its enormous economic power and technological resources, China is now a global political and military force engaged in an ideological struggle with the West. This new authoritarian power, unlike any other the West has faced, is using democracy to undermine democracy in pursuit of its global ambitions.
Combining a mass of evidence with unique insights, Hamilton and Ohlberg lay bare the nature and extent of the Chinese Communist Party's influence operations in Western countries – in politics, business, universities, think tanks and international institutions like the UN. The CCP's influence in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy receives special attention in this seminal book.
"This is the most comprehensive global approach to the subject of the infiltration of CCP into governments in the West. The passage about the former ambassador, John McCallum, is golden." Charles Burton, Senior Fellow Macdonald Laurier Institute
In this world-first expose the Chinese Communist Party's covert and sophisticated global program of influence and subversion, the authors combine meticulous research with compelling prose to bring to light China's threats to democratic freedoms and national sovereignty across Europe and North America – and show how we might push back against its growing influence.
In Canada, united front work encompasses a broad spectrum of activity, from espionage to foreign interference influence and engagement. The footprint of united front activity in Canada can be seen in how the Liberal government has reacted to China's aggressive diplomacy. With large political donations and united front agents in positions of influence, the Liberal Party has been soft peddling on China's human rights abuses and reluctance even to say the word "Taiwan" in public. Hidden Hand is particularly revealing about the way the Chinese Communist Party has mobilised elements of the Chinese diaspora in Canada to carry out its political work.
