The Royal announces winners of 2014 Royal Wine Competition
TORONTO, Sept. 19, 2014 /CNW/ - For the past five years, The Royal Wine Competition at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair has proudly shone a spotlight on the growing wine industry in Ontario and the impressive VQA vintages that are produced in the province.
Now entering its 92nd year, The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair aimed to uncork its biggest wine competition yet, sponsored by Arron Barberian.
With a record number of entries, The Royal Wine Competition featured a wide variety of vintages. Each wine was judged by a panel of some of the province's most respected experts, including head judge and Canada's first female master sommelier, Jennifer Huether, whose passion and knowledge of wine has gained her recognition as a top sommelier across the country.
"I was extremely proud to be a part of The Royal Wine Competition this year," said Huether. "Each wine brought something unique to the table and showcased what makes Ontario wines so special."
Wineries were able to enter a range of classes for white, rosé, red and dessert wines. There was a Best in Show winner selected for each category and an overall Best in Show prize.
The best in show winners for The 2014 Royal Agricultural Wine Competition are as follows:
- Overall Best in Show and Best in Show White: Megalomaniac / John Howard Wines "Bubblehead" Sparkling Pinot Noir (2011)
- Best in Show Red: Stanners Vineyard Pinot Noir (2011)
- Best in Show Rosé: Henry of Pelham Family Estate Rosé (2013)
- Best in Show Dessert: Rockway Vineyards Vidal Icewine (2013)
A selection of winning wines will be served at dining venues at The Royal and featured at various events during the Fair's 10 day run from November 7-16.
"It was great to see so many unique and exciting Ontario vintages take part in The Royal Wine Competition," said Sandra Banks, CEO of The Royal. "The Wine Competition is growing every year and offers participants and winners exposure to audiences from across Canada."
