OTTAWA, April 22, 2014 /CNW/ - Hydro Ottawa, recognized today for the fourth consecutive year as one of Canada's Greenest Employers, is spending Earth Day giving back to the community.
Distinguished with the national award for its dedication to green energy solutions and environmental stewardship, Hydro Ottawa is expanding its commitment to conservation within Ottawa-area schools.
In its first-ever Bright Ideas contest that promotes electricity safety and conservation to students, the company is awarding $1,000 to two local schools to put towards classroom resources. Knoxdale Public School and Katimavik Elementary School received the grand prize, with six other classes getting runner-up prizes for showing their commitment to the community and environment.
Today's Greenest Employers announcement again recognizes Hydro Ottawa's significant best practices in environmental sustainability, which are showcased in its 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility Report.
- Hydro Ottawa, along with partner Trees Ontario, will plant 14,414 trees in the Ottawa area this spring following its 2013 "Go Paperless" campaign encouraging customers to switch to E-Billing.
- The company has consistently achieved more than 90 per cent non-hazardous waste diversion, added more hybrid and flex-fuel vehicles to its fleet, and increased efficiencies at its office facilities and substations
- In 2013, Hydro Ottawa purchased 35 per cent of its goods and services locally, helping to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.
"Over the past year, we have continued to adapt our operations in ways that will make our organization and community more sustainable. It is our responsibility not only to provide electricity and green our own practices, but also to help our customers use our product efficiently. This is a challenge that we take very seriously and I am proud to see the community has joined us in this endeavour."
- Bryce Conrad, President and Chief Executive Officer, Hydro Ottawa
