Orangetheory Fitness coming to Sage Creek and Taylor this Summer
EDMONTON, March 31, 2016 /CNW/ - Orangetheory® Fitness, the fast-growing fitness franchise that is sweeping across North America, will open two studios in Winnipeg this Summer. Lauded by fitness magazines like Shape and called the Number One workout in America by Men's Journal, the studios will open in South Tuxedo in the Grant Park Festival at 7-1170 Taylor Ave. and in Southeast Winnipeg in the Sage Creek Village Centre at 802-50 Sage Creek Blvd.
Known for its science based approach with dynamic trainer-led group classes, the goal of each workout is to achieve 12 to 20 minutes of training at 84% or more in the participant's maximum heart rate zone. Tracked by heart rate monitors worn during the workout, this level of intensity is known as the orange zone. Training in this zone produces an "afterburn" effect with an increased metabolic rate lasting 24 to 36 hours after the workout.
"I have been part of the fitness industry for 30 years and there's never been anything like Orangetheory here in Winnipeg," said Ruth Asper, co-owner of the Orangetheory Taylor studio. "Our cutting edge, high-intensity interval format delivers an unbeatable 60-minute workout with an afterburn that can last for days."
This afterburn, dubbed the Orange Effect, refers to the physiological theory that is known as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption, or EPOC. EPOC is when the body continues to use oxygen and burn calories as it would during exercise. This results in an extra 200-400 calories burned post-workout due to an increase in metabolism.
"I first tried out Orangetheory when I lived in Edmonton and after my first workout I was hooked," said Sage Creek studio owner, Megan Scatliff Gabert. "The workout is fun, easy to follow, great for all fitness levels, and between the coaches and our unique fitness monitors, it really gets you working."
Fitness 2.0
Apart from its calorie-crushing interval format, Orangetheory offers its members another unique benefit – wearable technology that allows for real-time heart-rate monitoring during every workout. Every member in the class is equipped with a monitor to track their progression through five heart rate zones and their results are broadcast live on TV monitors throughout the studio.
"Integrating science and technology lets our members know how they are performing and pushes them to be their best each and every time," said Kathleen Skinner, co-owner of the Orangetheory Taylor studio. "This type of motivation, combined with the full body nature of the workout and the encouragement from the group trainer, leads to incredible results and is a huge part of why I got involved with the brand."
No stranger to the fitness world, Skinner studied Kinesiology at the University of Manitoba before becoming a certified personal trainer. She partnered with Taylor studio co-owner, Ruth Asper, previously on a successful integrated fitness facility, Strategym. Asper began her fitness career more than 30 years ago and has owned several different fitness facilities. She has a personal investment in the health and wellness of Winnipeggers through her family's charitable work. The Asper Foundation focuses on education, health and poverty reduction. Recently the Aspers established an endowed fund at the Heart and Stroke Foundation to promote active, healthy living in schools. Gabert, who brings more than 15 years of business experience to her studio, is a mom of three and a life-long fitness enthusiast. After joining an Orangetheory studio in Edmonton, Gabert decided to invest in the concept.
Orangetheory Fitness launched its first studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in March 2010, and has transformed into one of the world's top fitness franchises, with more than 340 studios in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Mexico, Australia and South America. There are currently more than 24 studios open in Canada with another 35 projected to open by the end of 2016. The fitness franchise is on track to open 1,000 studios around the world by 2017.
