Canadian Company on a Mission to Increase Hair Donations to Provide Wigs for Kids in Need
TORONTO, Dec. 7, 2016 /CNW/ - Ten years ago, Dorothy, mother of three-year-old Megan, found a bald spot on her daughter's head. Megan's hair quickly grew back, however, a few years later the issue reappeared. Megan was diagnosed with Alopecia and shortly after lost most of her hair. As a single mom with three kids, Dorothy struggled to find a wig that not only fit her daughter, but that was affordable and gave Megan the confidence to return to school and competitive dancing. After some internet research, Dorothy stumbled upon Angel Hair for Kids™, a charity that provides wigs and hair loss solutions to children in need. Two wigs later, Megan, age thirteen, is preparing to receive her third wig and has concluded that 'blondes really do have more fun.'
Angel Hair for Kids™, a program of A Child's Voice Foundation™, has helped hundreds of children just like Megan. Every year, thousands of children in Canada will lose their hair due to conditions such as cancer treatments, alopecia and burns. While their stories are all different, the results are the same: Angel Hair for Kids™ pairs each child with an experienced and compassionate salon that sizes, cuts, and styles a wig of the child's choosing. At her first appointment, Megan admits that she was extremely nervous and even hesitant to try the wig on. "I was worried about what people were going to think, and whether I would look the same as when I had my own hair," says Megan. She had the choice between two blonde wigs and a brunette wig. Each wig is created using 10-12 pony tails of human hair that is generously donated to the program. The wigs cost between $800 - $1,000 to create. Megan selected a long light blonde wig, and as she is preparing for her third wig, her initial fears that people would notice her wig have been replaced by excitement. "I don't feel nervous as much anymore as I know that I can trust the salon to give me the wig that is best for me," says Megan. "The way I look and the way I feel, it gives me the confidence and the courage to be me."
This confidence is what inspired Nisim International to support Angel Hair for Kids™. Nisim is a Canadian success story, offering breakthrough products that garner results, along with an eco-friendly attitude. Nisim was purchased in 1997 by CEO Tom Davidson after he began using their hair loss product and was overwhelmingly pleased with the results. The company's key products are NewHair Biofactors, a system to control excessive hair loss, and FAST, a shampoo and conditioner system designed to grow hair faster. Nisim provides FAST shampoo and conditioner to those who donate their locks to Angel Hair for Kids™, to help their chopped off hair grow back quick. "We are thrilled to partner with such a great Canadian charity," says Davidson. "By contributing to Angel Hair for Kids™, we know that the wigs this charity provides will help to increase a child's self-esteem during a difficult time in their lives." In addition to supplying FAST to donor's post-haircut, Nisim also provides hair cutting capes and measuring tapes to salons who partner with Angel Hair for Kids™.
Nisim has partnered with the charity for over five years. Angel Hair for Kids™ is a Canadian charity, allowing locally donated hair to go towards a wig for a Canadian child. "We work with a highly specialized wig manufacturer who creates each wig or hair piece specifically for the child receiving it, as well as numerous hair solution professionals who fit and style the wigs once they're ready for wear," says Roslyn Yearwood, Angel Hair for Kids™ Executive Director. In 2016, Nisim and Angel Hair for Kids™ recruited over 60 salons across Canada to offer free haircuts to anyone wishing to donate their hair to the program. Beauty Express Salons and Stores Inc., one of Canada's largest organizations operating spas, salons and beauty bars from coast to coast, has over 50 salons participating in the program and they are one of Nisim International and Angel Hair for Kids™ biggest charitable partners. A complete list of participating salons can be found online at nisiminc.ca.
