OTTAWA, April 25, 2018 /CNW/ - Nicola Di Iorio, Liberal MP for the riding of Saint-Léonard–Saint-Michel in the House of Commons of Canada, announced his departure from politics today for family reasons.
Di Iorio informed the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Justin Trudeau, of his decision. The date of his departure has not yet been set.
Serving His Constituents
Di Iorio, a committed citizen, is leaving office with the satisfaction of knowing that he has significantly contributed to serving his country. During his term, he has made available to his colleagues the fruit of his vast and rich legal experience. His passage in government was especially highlighted by five projects he was responsible for and that benefited Canadian society for which he is very proud. First, he mobilized strong forces of the East end of the Island of Montreal to ensure completion of the extension of the Montreal Metro's Blue Line. The project was adopted and announced this April 9. He also fought to create and adopt the National Impaired Driving Prevention Week, adopted in the House of Commons by 295 votes to 0. He was passionate about getting unanimous passage of Motion M-64 in June 2017, creating a National Italian Heritage Month. Di Iorio worked with fury to ensure the strictest standards were applied in the nomination process of the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada, and that for the best interest of the country. Lastly, his contribution has been essential to ensure that tax reform would allow small business owners to continue their activities while taking into account their specificities and the contributions they make to the country.
Di Iorio has over 35 years of experience as a lawyer specializing in labour and employment law and as a fully engaged citizen. He intends to continue his work of bringing the law into line with the new social reality created by technological advances and other transformations taking place in our society. He wants to prepare Canadians to take full advantage of the benefits of these important social changes.
The workplace is on the verge of a major upheaval, as the increasing use of artificial intelligence is leading to a true revolution. Di Iorio is fully aware of the legal, social, and financial challenges linked to such huge changes in the workplace, resulting from the automation of transportation. He will continue to pursue his relentless commitment to preventing impaired driving, and will soon announce some major projects he is working on.
The MP would like to thank his fellow citizens, from the bottom of his heart, for their unfailing support throughout his political engagement. He promises to continue supporting them unconditionally with his ongoing community involvement.
